Abstract

Large number of active compounds that shows high activity in vitro in
treating various diseases especially cancer, very few candidates have shown
clinical success. They do not have the ability to reach the target site of
action. One of the approaches used to overcome this serious issue is the
development of targeted drug delivery systems that release the drugs at the
desired site of action. This could increase therapeutic efficacy of the drugs
through improved pharmacokinetics and biodistribution and also decrease
their side effects. Particularly, polysaccharides such as chitosan and its
derivatives can be utilized in various medical applications, because of its
biological properties and biodegradability. Moreover, chitosan and graphene
oxide have various therapeutic properties such as inhibition of growth of
microorganisms and others. In addition, silicon and iron oxides have also
been proposed as good adsorbents and promising drug delivery systems,
separately. Therefore, the specific aims of the work carried out in this thesis
can be summarized as follows.
