Abstract

The Egyptian state has so far succeeded in achieving a great leap in road projects comparable to the major global road networks, within a new development stage during which it witnessed unprecedented national projects for the advancement of the state’s infrastructure, on top of these projects are road and main axes projects, which are implemented in a short period of time. Hence the importance of having a comprehensive system suitable to monitor the state of the road network in service in Egypt and its periodic maintenance system, which requires gathering information about it and organizing it in a scientific way in order to study and evaluate its performance in the conditions and environment in which it operates, and to work to continuously improve its performance within the required cost and priorities. Here, the worth of getting a serious vision towards implementing the LTPP system in Egypt is evident, which is a system that has been in place for not long ago in developed countries such as the United States of America and Canada, which helps in understanding the performance of roads and the factors affecting them in an objective way. The LTPP system has ambitious goals for improving road performance centered around Collecting accurate information - as needed - about the operating roads network over extended periods of time and storing it in databases designated for this purpose, then processing this information and analyzing it in a systematic and scientific manner to study the performance of these methods in their operating environment, and then generate appropriate reliable information that can be used by specialists in fields of road design, construction, maintenance and managing it in a professional way.The need to move towards the implementation of the LTPP system in Egypt is crystallized with what Egypt owns of an old road network and what has been implemented in recent times of large road projects and involving them into service continuously in line with the needs of society and its I development, which helps a deeper understanding of roads performance in Egypt. then constructing them and making appropriate maintenance in ways, that gives the best performance at the lowest possible cost. In this study, the different methods used to evaluate the road performance in an objective way were reviewed by identifying the different types of road distresses in different sections of it, and assessing its severity and extension across the studied area of the road to extract parameters that reflect the road’s performance changes during its operation period.Therefor the appropriate strategies for rehabilitation and repair can be implemented in the appropriate time. Implementation of LTPP system in Egypt certainly also requires the use of the necessary equipment to measure performance, take photos, collect information and store it in the appropriate format in the system’s databases to be available when setting work priorities for road network management in Egypt within available budget.
