Abstract

Telogen effluvium (TE) is a non-scarring, diffuse hair loss from the scalp that occurs around 3 months after a triggering event and is usually self-limiting. In TE, hair loss is usually less than 50% of the scalp hair. True incidence of telogen effluvium is not well determined due to lack of data, especially of subclinical cases. A wide variety of triggers have been implicated such as severe febrile illness, pregnancy (telogen gravidarum), chronic systemic illness, a change in medication, severe hemorrhage, sudden starvation, , accidental trauma, surgical operations, severe emotional stress and nutritional deficiency. In approximately one-third of cases, it is impossible to identify the precipitating event.
Many prior studies have either supported or failed to find a correlation between telogen effluvium and deficiencies in vitamins and minerals, in particular, vitamin D, ferritin, vitamin B12, folate, and zinc.
