Abstract

Background: Shared governance is an accountability model that is seen as a strategy for fostering professional nursing practices and work engagement
through empowerment of nurses.Aim: To investigate the relationship among shared governance, nurses’
empowerment and work engagement at Menoufia University Hospital. Methods:
A descriptive correlational research design was used. Stratified random sample of
200 nurses was recruited from different departments and units of Menoufia
University Hospital at Shebin El-Kom. Index Professional Nursing Governance,
Perception Empowerment Instrument, and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale were
used to collect data from recruited study’s sample. Results: The total score of
index professional nursing governance (IPNG) in Menoufia University hospital
was traditional governance. There was a moderate level of empowerment and
work engagement among the majority of study sample.
Conclusion: Traditional governance was the identified nursing governance
pattern by majority of study sample. As shared governance was not experienced
by majority of study sample, there was no relationship among shared governance,
empowerment, and work engagement of study sample.

structure reform and use shared or self-governance organizational structure to
enhance nurses’ empowerment and work engagement.
