Abstract

Background: Sensory perception alteration that occur during cancer treatment can seriously impact on patient’s health and nutritional status, activities of daily living, independence, and the possibility of recovery. Aim: This study aimed to assessment of sensory perception alteration for patients receiving ACH. Subjects and method: Across section study design using a mixed-methods study combining qualitative and quantitative approaches of data collection was adapted. A convenience sample from patients receiving ACH that were available within 6 months. Sample of 100 cancer patients receiving ACH was included in the study. Data were collected through Sensory Administrated Questionnaire for quantitative data and interview schedule for qualitative data collection. Results: Majority of the patients in the study displayed alteration of taste perception followed by sense of tactile perception alteration with mean (57.54). There is statistically significant relation between the starting date of ACH with sense of vision & tactile perception at p value ˂ 0.05. Also, six themes were identified in the current study which reported that more than half of patients express taste perception alterations often seem to manifest as a metallic taste which is one of the most common complaints, changes in sour, bitter, sweet, and salty sensations also were found frequently. Conclusion: Sensory perception alterations during receiving ACH are significant complaints of cancer patients as well as decrease life satisfaction, poor compliance, and decreased therapy response. Recommendations conducting educational and training programs to improve patient’s knowledge regarding receiving of ACH and its side effects and providing training for nurses about the possible methods to assess sensory perception for patients undergoing treatment.
