Abstract
Succinylcholine is the best drug for rapidly providing ideal conditions for short procedures requiring endotracheal intubation. Unfortunately, its use is associated with muscular fasciculations and postoperative myalgia (POM). One of proposed mechanisms of its causation is release of free radicals leading to postoperative myalgia so it is proposed to use selenium as antioxidant to prevent POM. We have studied 80 adult patients in the age group of 20-40 years belonging to ASA I or II. Patients were divided into two groups of 40 patients each, taking alternate patient for each group. group S (Selenium group) 40 patients were given Selenium 200 mcg orally 2 hours before induction of general anesthesia and group C (control group) 40 patients were given starch capsules orally 2 hours before induction of general anesthesia. Both groups did not have statistically significant difference between both study groups as regarding the incidence or the severity of fasciculations but both groups have a statistically significant difference between both study groups regarding POM on the 1st post-operative day. Selenium group have a statistically significant difference as regarding the postoperative supplement analgesia and time of 1st postoperative rescue analgesia was delayed in selenium group. As regards to the postoperative complications both groups did not have statistically significant difference.
