Abstract

The study aimed to evaluate one of a new bulk-fill resin based composites (RBCs), (FiltekTM Bulk-Fill) that packed with bulk filling technique and compare it with an incremental RBC (FiltekTM Z350 XT) which packed incrementally to be used as restorative materials. A total of 80 specimens of Filtek™ Bulk-Fill and Filtek™ Z250 XT (40 for each composite resin material used in this study) were prepared by using split Teflon mold of 10 mm diameter and 4 mm thickness. characterization techniques were used to fully describe the materials properties, X-ray diffraction for structure investigation, Surface Profilometry for measuring the surface roughness, FTIR spectroscopy for degree of conversion and Vickers microhardness test for depth of cure and creep resistance. The results include that increasing the amount of filler particles with the presence of UDMA and 1,12-DDDMA monomers can improve the microstructure, surface roughness, degree of conversion, creep resistance of FiltekTM Bulk-Fill composite resin material. Also, the presence of Bis-GMA monomer within the resin matrix improves the depth of cure and surface microhardness of the incrementally placed FiltekTM Z350 XT composite resin material. The results concluded that, the FiltekTM Bulk-Fill composite resin material has better physical and mechanical properties especially, high stability and creep resistance when subjected to high stresses which is considered as one of important properties for dental materials used for restorations. So, FiltekTM Bulk-Fill composite resin material is a good choice to be used for posterior and anterior restorations especially in case of molars and front teeth restorations as they usually subjected to high stress.
