Abstract

Critically ill children are at risk of upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. In observational studies the incidence of important bleeding ranged from 0.4 to 5%. This bleeding is associated with more red blood cell transfusions, longer duration of mechanical ventilation and stay in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) as well as increased healthcare costs. The use of acid suppression medications to attempt to decrease risk of GI bleeding most frequently proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) or histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs) is common.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of stress ulcer prophylaxis in critically ill children.
This was a randomized controlled trial conducted on critically ill child admitted into the PICU, Pediatric Department, Menoufia University during the study period from January 2019 till September 2020.
This study was conducted on 144 subjects, divided into two groups:
 group I: Included 72 patients of critically ill children who were given omeprazole for stress ulcer prophylaxis.
 group II: Included 72 patients of critically ill children who were not managed in PICU without SUP or placebo.
Omeprazole ( Julphar Egypt) for stress ulcer prophylaxis was given at dose of 1mg/kg/dose once daily. The drug was given upon PICU admission.
