Abstract

This study aimed at evaluation of the dentoalveolar, skeletal, and soft tissue effects obtained with the modified bone‑anchored pendulum appliance in patients with Class II malocclusion. Martial and methods: A Sample of 12 patients (8 females, 4 males) at a mean pretreatment age of 13.17 ± 0.92 (13 years and 2 months) were enrolled in this study. All patients were treated with the modified bone‑anchored pendulum appliance for an average duration of 4.65 ± 1.54 months. Active distalization period was evaluated with pre-distalization and post-distalization lateral cephalograms. Skeletal, dentoalveolar, and soft tissue variables were obtained. Based on these variables, the treatment effects were evaluated with Paired-Samples t-test. Results: Correction of Class II molar relationship resulted from distal movement of 4.83 mm and tipping of 12.52° of the first maxillary molars. The maxillary first and second premolars were spontaneously distalized an average of 2.38 mm and 2.95 mm respectively. The premolars also tipped significantly distally. No skeletal changes or loss of anchorage encountered during distalization phase. Conclusion: The modified bone‑anchored pendulum appliance proved to be an effective minimally invasive and compliance-free method for distalization of maxillary molars without any anchorage loss.
