Abstract

The aim of this thesis was to design and develop a novel biodegradable bioactive hydrogel template of organic-inorganic composite, combined with the controlled release of melatonin for periodontal bone regeneration.
Periodontal disease affects the supportive tissues surrounding the teeth and comprises a diversity of inflammatory appearances that can lead to progressive tissue damage and eventually tooth loss (Kinane et al., 2017). from a physio-pathological perspective, periodontitis is an inflammatory reaction to microbial disparity related to dental plaque (Armitage, 1999; Chappie et al., 2017). In the last used classification two key separate presentations of periodontitis were documented: chronic periodontitis (CP) and aggressive periodontitis (AP). CP infrequently advances in the first three decades of life and has a slow rate of cyclic advancement. Localized Aggressive Periodontitis (LAP) and Generalized Aggressive Periodontitis (GAP) have been designated as rapidly progressive tissue destruction conditions that generally lack connection to dental plaque deposits, develop premature in life and have an advanced progression rate comparative to CP (Nico, 1999; Albandar, 2014).
The world workshop on the classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions was held in 2017. The workshop was co-sponsored by the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and they developed a new classification scheme for periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions for clinicians to properly diagnose and treat patients as well as for scientists to investigate etiology, pathogenesis, natural history, and treatment of the diseases and conditions.
