Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to compare the effect of live probiotic cultures present in fermented diary
product (yogurt) to the effect of freeze-dried probiotic supplied in sachets on gingival bleeding on
brushing, dental plaque pH and gingival condition in adolescents (12-15) years old.
Methodology: This randomized pilot clinical study was conducted among 12-15 years old .Twenty
adolescents were divided into two equal groups, group A received fermented dairy product (Activia
yogurt) containing Bifidobacterium animalis lactis DN-173 010/CNCM I-2494 and group B received
freeze-dried probiotic sachets (Bacilac child) containing five billion freeze-dried Lacteobacilli rhamnose
GG and Bifidobacteria Bb-12. All participants were instructed to use the intervention for four weeks.
Gingival bleeding on brushing, gingival index (GI) and dental plaque pH were assigned and recorded at
baseline and after four weeks.
Results: A statistically significant difference in the percentage of gingival bleeding on brushing before
and after treatment in group A and B was found with P values= 0.024, 0.004 respectively. Also, a
statistically significant reduction in GI before and after treatment for group A and B with P values=
0.0053, 0.003 respectively, while there was insignificant statistical difference in dental plaque pH values
before and after treatment in group A and B with P values = 0.6673, 0.718 respectively. Results also
revealed that there was insignificant statistical difference between the two groups after treatment
regarding gingival bleeding on brushing, GI and dental plaque pH.
Conclusions: The use of different forms of probiotic have a corrective effect on gingival
inflammation and oral health in adolescents with gingival problems.
