Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder of multiple etiology characterized by chronic hyperglycemia with disturbances of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Foot ulcers are a major complication of diabetes mellitus, with high morbidity, mortality and resource utilization. Treatment of these foot ulcers is challenging because of their multi-factorial etiology, and it places a high burden on patients, healthcare systems and society. Even when an ulcer is successfully healed, risk for recurrence is highwith reported rates between 30 and 40% within the first year. Diabetes impairs the coagulation homeostasis which cause vascular thrombotic events. There is a change of morphology and platelet function in diabetic patients resulting in changes in platelet indices. Vascular endothelial dysfunction has beenreported in type II DM.This hypercoagulabilitycould be due to an imbalance betweenthe endothelial surface and the blood clotting factors. Use of platelet volume indices provides animportant, simple, effortless and cost effective tool which can be useful in predicting an impending thrombotic state and vascular complications of diabetes. Our cross sectional study aimed toevaluate hemostatic System Changes which occurs among diabetic foot ulcer patients.
