Abstract

Cortical development is dependent on extrinsic stimulation. As such, sensory deprivation, as in congenital hearing loss can dramatically alter functional connectivity and growth in the auditory system. Cochlear implant (CI) can be used effectively in the profoundly hearing impaired children. It increases auditory sensitivity by direct electrical stimulation of auditory nerve fibers, enabling phonemic awareness, discrimination and identification ultimately yielding speech understanding. Early implantation stimulates the brain that has not been re-organized and will therefore be more receptive to auditory input and greater auditory capacity.
