Abstract Endotoxemia is a complex clinical condition associated with serious complications. Cardiomyopathy represents a major complication that contributes to the elevated mortality rate of endotoxic shock. In the current work, pharmacologic, biochemical, and protein expressionstudies were employed to evaluate the dose effect relationship of nicotine on cardiovascular and autonomic derangements of endotoxemia and provide insights on the relative contribution of the α7-nAChRsmonomericandheteromericα4β2-nAChRs and related inflammatory cytokines in cardiac and brainstem tissues in nicotine/endotoxic interactions. The role of androgens and their biosynthetic enzymes in endotoxic responses have been alsoinvestigated. Experiments were conducted in conscious freely moving male rats pre-instrumented with intravascular (femoral) and intracisternal cannulas. |
