Abstract

The renewable energy (RE) is clean energy that has a very low environmental impact compared to the conventional energy sources. RE sources never run out, on the other hand conventional energy sources are finite and one day will be depleted. Wind is considered one of the most important renewable energy sources. For different regions and locations, climatic conditions including solar irradiance, temperature and wind speed are continuously changing. It may cause the instability shortcoming for electrical power generation from solar photovoltaic and wind turbines. In order to efficiently and economically utilize the renewable energy resources the concept of Hybrid Energy Systems (HES) has been proposed. This thesis demonstrates the model of grid connected hybrid generation system consisting of doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind energy conversion system, diesel generator, and battery energy storage system (BESS). The performance of the presented system is evaluated through different simulation cases using MATLAB/SIMULINK program. The power, voltage and current waveforms at different points of the system are presented during normal and abnormal conditions such as disconnecting wind, disconnecting diesel, disconnecting battery energy system and three phase to ground fault.
