Abstract

The objective of this study is to use Egyptian Jatropha and Castor oils to obtain biofuels, and evaluation of the obtained biofuels as fuels for gas oil and JET A-1 engines according to physical and chemical properties of gas oil and JET A-1 fuels. The oils were characterized for their fatty acids profile and their physical properties. The characteristic properties of Jatropha and Castor oils were determined according to (ASTM) and (IP) specifications. Alumina and Acid Modified Bentonite (Montmorillonite-HCl) were used in this study as catalysts for cracking of Jatropha and Castor oils to obtain their corresponding biofuels. There are several parameters which affect the conversion reaction of Jatropha and Castor oils into biofuels including: catalyst type, catalyst ratio (%) and temperature. These parameters were studied to attain the optimized conversion reaction conditions. The suitable blend between “the obtained biofuels” and “gas oil fuel” was (10% Biofuel + 90% Gas oil fuel). The suitable blend between “the obtained biofuels” and “JET A-1 fuel” was (5% Biofuel + 95% JET A-1 fuel). The results of these “biofuel blends” were in acceptable range according to the standard values of (ASTM) and (IP) specifications.
