Abstract Membrane separation technique has been widely practiced in water purification with Polysulfone (PSf) polymer membrane, nanoparticles have been added to the polymer medium in order to increase its hydrophilicity and performance, for this study, polysulfone was prepared by dissolving polysulfone beads in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF). Carbon nanosphere particles (CNs) were prepared from glucose using a controlled hydrothermal and then used as fillers for polysulfone (PSf) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane matrix. The prepared CNs, PSf, and polysulfone/carbon nanosphere (PSf/CNs) composite UF membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and water contact angle. Methyl blue and Rhodamine B coloring are used to test membrane efficiency, also treatment of drinking water was did by composite UF membranes in this study. UF is a physical sieving barrier perfect for removing turbidity. Turbidity of the membrane permeate sample was constantly reduced to 0.3 NTU with difference values of feed. CNs adsorption properties, functional oxygen groups and high surface area showed a significant improvement in the performance of the membranes against dyes removal. Because of CNs act as fillers, the membrane permeability decrease from 42.2 to 10.9 L/m2 h bar for PSf/CNs (7%). By addition the CNs, dye rejection increased from 51.4% to 93.6%, and from 39.3% to 81.5%, for Methyl blue and Rhodamine B dyes, respectively. While, the flux decreased from 216.3 to 168.9 L/m²h and 409.6 from 629 L/m²h for the neat PSf and PSf/CNs (5%), respectively. |
