Abstract

Summary
Adriamycin (doxorubicin) is an anthracycline, antibiotic medication used
to treat cancers like; breast cancer, bladder cancer, Kaposi’s sarcoma,
lymphoma, and acute lymphocytic leukemia. It works by interfering with DNA.
It is very important in the treatment of cancer although its use may be
complicated and accompanied by the presence of acute and chronic side effects
such as cardiotoxicity, hepatotoxicity and renal toxicity.
In recent years, plants are important sources of medicine and a large
number of drugs are derived from plants. Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is an
important aromatic perennial evergreen herbs in the mint family Lamiaceae. It
is used in the medicinal and ornamental uses in many countries for diseases
treatment. Thyme therapeutic activity is due to the presence of many essential
oils which have a wide variety of pharmacological effects.
The aim of this study is to investigate the histological effect of thyme oil
(Thymus vulgaris) on Adriamycin induced toxicities in albino rats. The study
including biochemical, histological and ultrastructural studies on liver and
kidney.
The animals were divided into four groups as follows:
1. Control group: Animals of this group (12 rats) served as control.
These animals administered orally with distilled water .
2. Thyme- treated group: Animals (12 rats) given thyme oil orally at a
dose of 0.5 ml/kg b.w. once time per week for 3 and 6 weeks.
3. Adriamycin- treated group: Animals (12 rats) were injected
intraperitonealy with Adriamycin at a dose level 2 mg/kg b.w.
once per week for 3and 6 weeks.
4. Adriamycin followed by thyme treated group: Animals (12 rats)
injected intraperitonealy with Adriamycin at a dose level of 2
