Abstract The increasing rates of population growth and the differences in the standard of living lead to increased rates of waste generation, which need to follow the correct and safe methods of dealing with waste to reduce the risks of pollution to the surrounding environment in general and groundwater in particular. In view of the seriousness of landfills, the focus of this study will be on the impact of landfills on the groundwater through laboratory tests conducted on six groundwater samples taken from wells near the landfill sites in the governorate of Karbala in Iraq to reveal the characteristics of groundwater and the impact of the leachate pollutants on the surrounding farmlands. A group of samples will be taken from groundwater used for agriculture in the surrounding areas and study its effect range. 3D Groundwater Modelling System (GMS) was also applied in the study area to prepare a simulation for the pollutant progress around the landfill site and predict the pollutant concentrations in the surrounding wells for the next years. Through the laboratory tests available for groundwater samples drawn from the wells surrounding the landfill, some pollutants that affect the groundwater used for agricultural purposes in the neighboring lands were studied. Among these elements (NO3, SO4, Cl, PH, T.D.S, PO4 and NH3) the results showed an increase in the oncentrations of pollutants in the groundwater over time. |
