Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is neurodegenerative disorder that characterized by a gradual deterioration for hippocampal and cortical neurons which leads to poor memory and cognitive ability. This study was designed to evaluate the role of probiotics in management of Alzheimer’s disease by understanding Na + K -ATPases subunit alpha1(ATP1A1) activity and the gene expression of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) in experimental rat model. In the current study, Fifty white male albino rats, 6-7 weeks old and weighting 170-180 g were used in the experimental investigation of this study. Rats were divided into 5 main equal groups, 10 animals each groups. group 1 (control group): Normal healthy rats served as negative control group in which rats didn’t receive any treatment. group 2 (Acidophilus probiotic group): rats were oral administered by gavage acidophilus probiotic at a dose of (12×10 8 CFU/ml; 10ml /kg body weight) for 30 days. group 3 (AD group): rats were intraperitoneally injected with D-galactose at a dose of 120 mg/kg bw daily and daily oral administration of AlCl3 at a dose 50 mg/Kg. body weight for 30 days to achieve Alzheimer’s model.
