Abstract

Water is a global solvent and it is necessary for life. Therefore, water pollution is one of the biggest and most dangerous environmental problems facing the world. Pollution of water resources is increasing day by day due to population growth, technological development, and the increase in human activities, including domestic, agricultural, and industrial activities. Copper was chosen to represent the heavy metal pollutants in this study. Water treatment is an important matter and is required to remove such pollutants and unwanted components or reduce their concentration, thus making the water safe for the desired end use. Traditional techniques for removing heavy metal ions from their aqueous solutions have inherent disadvantages including low efficiency, high cost, and the generation of more other toxic wastes. Bio-adsorbents are regenerative and have several advantages over traditional adsorbents, such as biodegradability, non-toxicity, environment friendly materials, hydrophilicity and good reusability. Polymeric adsorbents have been known for their high efficiency and low cost in removing water pollutants as the functional groups in the polymeric skeleton improve their adsorption efficiency and increase the chance of removing pollutants. Therefore, modification of the polymer by introducing new functional groups to increase the adsorption efficiency and applicability in different media is necessary. Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and chitosan (CS) are economically feasible due to their ease of preparation. The present study includes the preparation of blend membranes of CMC and CS modified with different concentrations of thiocarbamoyl and thiophene derivatives and their applications in wastewater treatment to remove copper (II) ions within 24 h and monitoring the change in the pH of aqueous solutions during the adsorption and treatment process. The concentration of Cu(II) ions was determined by ICP Spectroscopy. from this study, results were obtained, which showed that the best adsorption capacity of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution was 80.76 mg/g within 720 minutes by K4 adsorbent in a weight ratio of (1: 1: 1) (CMC:2:CS). Also, its adsorption capacity was 56.11 mg/g in just 10 minutes of the adsorption process.
