Abstract

Introduction: Ameloblastoma (AM) is a benign but locally aggressive odontogenic tumor, and exhibit specific biologic behavior and high recurrence rate. Likewise, odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a developmental odontogenic cyst that has a high recurrence rate and aggressive behavior. The aim of this study was to perform an immunohistochemical evaluation of the effect of perlecan (Pln) and podoplanin (D2-40) expression on clinicopathological behavior of both odontogenic lesions. Materials and Methods: A total of 40 formalin paraffin tissue blocks of AM and OKC were stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E). Both of lesions were immunohistochemically examined for presence of Pln and D2- 40. Results: Both lesions expressed Pln and D2-40 with no statistically significant difference between them. Lymphatic microvascular density (LMVD) was statistically high at AM as compared to OKC. Conclusion: In the light of the findings of the present study, we can conclude that Pln is suggested to play a role in the regulation of cellular growth and differentiation of AM and OKC. In adittion, D2-40 might have a role in differentiation and cell proliferation of AM and OKC. Moreover, lymphangiogenesis might play a role in progression of AM.
