Abstract

This study was a Randomized clinical trial conducted to compare between double and triple scan protocols for manufacturing the surgical guides on the accuracy of implant placement in completely edentulous patients using CBCT.
This study included 8 completely edentulous patients. Patients were selected from the Outpatient Clinic, Removable Prosthodontics Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Ain-Shams University. Complete denture was constructed and duplicated to a radiographic template “scan appliance”. The patients were divided and randomized into two groups.
In group I, double scan protocol was adopted. Pre-operative CBCT scanning was made for the patients while they were wearing radiographic template and another CBCT for the scan appliance.
However, in group II triple scan protocol was adopted. Pre-operative CBCT scanning were made for the patients while they were wearing radiographic template. An optical scan was made for the scan appliance once on the model and another optical scan for the model only. Blue sky Software was utilized for virtual implant planning. After planning of the surgical guide, STL file was exported and printed.
Two implants were installed in the mandibular canine-premolar areas following computer aided surgical guides. The surgical procedures were made with the aid of computer designed and manufactured surgical guides. Another post-operative CBCT scan was made for the patients while wearing the same scan appliance. Superimposition of the pre-operative CBCT (virtual planning) and the postoperative CBCT after implants insertion was made. Deviations of implants were measured in three parameters; angular, lateral coronal and lateral and apical.
The results of this study revealed statistically insignificant difference between the two groups which open the choice to the technicians to select their preferred technique.
