Abstract

Mother care for gastroenteritis is important to decrease complication of preschool suffering. The aim of this study was to assess mothers’ care toward their preschool children with gastroenteritis. Research design: Descriptive research design was utilized. Setting: This study was conducted at Pediatrics Out Patient Clinics of Benha Fever Hospital, Benha University Hospital and Benha Special Hospital for Children Sample: Simple random sample comprised of 100 mothers with children with gastroenteritis which collected through six months. Tools: A structured interviewing questionnaires consisted of three parts: Mothers’ socio- demographic characteristics, their children personal characteristics, mothers’ knowledge about gastroenteritis and reported practices toward care of their children with gastroenteritis. Results: 56% of the studied mothers aged from 30-<40 years old with mean age 22.72±4.20, 59% of their children were female, 27% of the studied mothers had good total knowledge score and 45% of them had satisfactory total practices score regarding gastroenteritis. Conclusion: There were statistically significant relation between total knowledge score of the studied mothers about gastroenteritis and their age and their educational level and there was negative significant correlation between mothers total knowledge score and their total practices score about gastroenteritis. Recommendations: Health educational program should be developed and implemented for mothers children with gastroenteritis to upgrade knowledge and proper practices toward care of their children regarding gastroenteritis.
