Abstract Suicide is among the most common causes of death worldwide. And depression is among the most common mental disorder, leading to suicide. So, recognizing the risk factors of suicide in depressed patients require efforts and more details. This study is based on the hypothesis that suicide probability and depression severity are correlated to modifiable clinical factors; sleep disturbances and evening chronotype, and socio-culture factor; religiosity. And its aim was to provide detailed identification of risk factors of suicide in depressed patients. The thesis is composed of two units, the literature review, and the practical unit. I. The literature review: It consisted of four chapters. In the first chapter, suicide discussed and its definitions, epidemiology, neurobiology, diagnosis, and prevention. Also, factors affecting suicide were discussed and divided into predisposing and precipitating factors. The predisposing factors included genetic predisposition, early- life adversity, personality traits, the familial transmission of suicidal behaviours, and cognitive deficits. The precipitating factors included nonfatal suicide behaviour, psychiatric disorders, psychological factors, and contextual factors related to suicidal risk. In the second chapter, depression and its prevalence, the effect on health loss, and the effect of COVID-19 were mentioned. Also, the relation between depression and suicide was presented, depending on recent biological, psychological, and social aspects. The biological aspect included genetic, neuroanatomical, and biochemical changes. The psychological aspect mentioned the role of hopelessness, gender, psychological pain, belongingness, and acquired capability of suicide. And the social aspect contains two issues: loneliness, and stigma. |
