Summary:
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different non-invasive treatment modalities (non-fluoride toothpaste, fluoride toothpaste and ICON resin infiltration) on improvement of color of white spot lesions.
In order to measure enamel color change 35 sound human premolar tooth that were extracted for orthodontic reasons, were collected and used in this study. All teeth surfaces were covered by nail polish except the middle-middle third of the buccal surface. That part of the buccal surface was the part subjected to demineralization and then treatment according to the assigned treatment group. The teeth were randomly assigned into 5 groups (n= 7), the 5 treatment groups were (NF=Non-Fluoride toothpaste, NF/I=Non-Fluoride toothpaste followed by resin infiltration application, F= Fluoride toothpaste, F/I= fluoride toothpaste followed by resin infiltration and I= ICON resin infiltration). Color of each tooth was measured before demineralization (baseline measurement) after demineralization (demineralized enamel surface) and after treatment (treated enamel surface) using the Vita Easyshade device. ΔE was then calculated from the attained values using the following equation ΔE = (ΔL2+ Δa2+ Δb2) 1/2.
One-way ANOVA test showed that the (I) group exhibited the lowest ΔE that was clinically accepted value (ΔE˂3.7). There was no statistical significance between the (I) group and the (NF/I) group, which was also exhibited a clinically accepted value. The highest ΔE value belonged to the (NF) group; it was not a clinically accepted value. There was statistical significance in comparison to the other treatment groups. For the ΔL value also the (I) group showed the lowest values, that was statistically significant with the other treatment groups.
