Abstract The thesis include two parts, part 1 includes the phytochemical investigation of Lactuca serriola which led to the isolation of seventeen compounds of eight chemical groups. The isolated compounds were identified using various spectroscopic techniques including : IR, 1D- and 2D-NMR, HRESIMS and HR-FAB-MS. Seventeen compounds were identified of which 1 compound (glyceryl-1`-palmitate) is reported for the first time from Asteraceae, 2 compounds (Taraxast-20-ene-3β,30-diol and (2S,3S,4R,2′R,14E)-2-(2′-Hydroxytetracosanoylamino)-14- octadecene-1,3,4-triol) are reported for the first time from genus Lactuca, 6 compounds (β-Sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucoside, (E)-p-coumaric acid, p-hydroxy phenylacetic acid, protocatechuic acid, lactuside B and cichorioside B) are recorded for the first time from Lactuca serriola and 8 compounds (lupeol, β-sitosterol, lactucopicrin, 11β,13-dihydrolactucin, lactuside A, kaempferol, quercetin, and luteolin-7-O-β-D glucoside) were previously isolated from the titled plant. Part 2 is the biological study of Lactuca serriola L. which includes evaluation of cytotoxic activity (MTT assay), antioxidant activity (ABTS, DPPH and FRAP assays), antidiabetic activity (α-glucosidase inhibitory activity assay), antimicrobial activity and anti-Alzheimer’s activity (butyrylcholineasterase inhibitory activity assay). The evaluated activities were attributed mainly to the plant content of flavonoids and phenolic acids of ethyl acetate fraction. |
