Abstract

Lichen planus is a chronic, inflammatory, T-cell mediated, autoimmune, mucocutaneous disease that affects mainly the stratified squamous epithelia. The precise etiology of OLP lesions is still unknown. Several studies revealed that OLP lesions often undergo remissions and exacerbations according to patients’ emotional status.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Glutamine combined with topical corticosteroid in the treatment of oral erosive LP.
In this clinical trial, 30 patients with a confirmed clinical and histopathological diagnosis of OLP were recruited in this study. They were selected from the pool at dental clinic of the Oral medicine and periodontology department of the faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University. They were divided into 2 equal groups:
 group 1 (Control group): 15 patients were be given a topical corticosteroid (Kenacort in orabase) plus antifungal (Miconazole oral gel) (conventional therapy).
 group 2 (Test group): 15 patients were given Glutamine therapy (Glutamine capsules taken orally) in combination with a topical corticosteroid (Kenacort in orabase) plus antifungal (Miconazole oral gel).
The result of this study revealed that both groups showed decrease in the clinical signs and symptoms of EOLP. The glutamine treated group (Test group) showed a significantly higher decrease in the pain score (VAS) in comparison to the corticosteroid treated group (Control group). Regarding the lesion size score, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups.
