Abstract

Neonatal sepsis remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among infants, especially in middle and lower-income countries. MicroRNAs (miRNA) are single-stranded non-coding RNAs with the function of post-transcriptional gene silencing. Besides their normal function in the regulation of gene expression, altered miRNA levels in plasma/serum have been intensively investigated with regards to their role as possible biomarkers in different human diseases, also in sepsis.
Nevertheless, there is a scarcity in the published literatures which investigate the diagnostic performance of miRNAs in neonatal sepsis. Therefore, we performed the present prospective cohort study to assess the role of miRNA- 16a and miRNA- 451 as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for neonatal sepsis.
In present prospective study, we included 25 neonates with sepsis admitted to neonatal ICU of Menoufia university Hospital and 25 healthy controls from September 2018 to July2019.
In our cohort, the mean age of the included patients was 1.72 ± 2.11; while the majority of them were females (52%). There was no statistically significant difference observed between both groups.
