Abstract

Frequency of Antibiotic Prescription and the most commonly prescribed antibiotics in common infections presented in five primary healthcare centers in Cairo, Egypt among Primary Healthcare Physicians.
Objectives of the study: To measure the frequency of antibiotic prescription among PHC physicians, to identify the most commonly prescribed antibiotic by PHC physicians, to measure the frequency of unjustified antibiotic prescription by PHC physicians, and to identify factors influencing antibiotic prescribing by PHC physicians
Data collection tools: total of 535 prescription were collected to identify the frequency of antibiotic prescription and the most commonly prescribed antibiotic, 512 checklists about symptoms and signs of common health problems presented to the primary health care (respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract and urinary tract) were fulfilled by the researcher and compared to the prescriptions written by the physicians, these check lists were formed according to Egypt ministry of health guidelines, and there were self-administrated questionnaires that were fulfil by the available physicians at the five centres to evaluate physicians’ knowledge and attitude concerning antibiotics prescription, antibiotics resistance, and factors affecting irrational antibiotic prescription.
Results: Antibiotic prescription rate was (33.8%) by 181 prescription containing antibiotic to (535) total prescriptions, the most commonly prescribed antibiotic was amoxil (Penicillins) by (31.5%).
