Abstract

In Egypt, it is believed now that HCC is one of the common malignancies and a leading cause of death due to high prevalence of cirrhosis related to chronic HCV. In previous years there is an increase in its incidence and it is expected that the number of cases continues to grow. HCC is a major health problem worldwide and its diagnosis is still challenging. Selenoprotein P (SELENOP) is a kind of secretory glycoproteins synthesized by the liver, and functions as the carrier of selenium and maintains the dynamic balance and distribution of selenium in the body. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of serum selenoprotein P as a marker for diagnosis and follow up of therapeutic intervention outcome in hepatocellular carcinoma patients. This study was a prospective study carried out on 70 patients who were enrolled from inpatient and outpatient clinic of Tropical Medicine Department; Faculty of Medicine, Tanta University during the period from December 2018 to April 2020. Patients were classified into the followings: group I: included 45 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. Those patients were subdivided into: group I A: included 20 HCC patients who underwent HCC therapeutic intervention, those patients were evaluated before and after their therapeutic intervention. group I B: included 25 HCC patients who didn‟t undergo HCC therapeutic intervention.
