Abstract
Schizophrenia is one of the most sever and chronic mental disorder that characterized by a major disturbance in thought, perception and psychosocial functioning. Patients with schizophrenia frequently complain of decreased social support which is acting as a critical factor of improving social functioning and coping with stressful situations. Maladaptive coping strategies such as emotion and avoidance oriented coping are more widely used among schizophrenic patients. Non-adherence to medication exacerbates psychotic and negative symptoms and reduces social functioning. Aim of this study: assess social support, coping strategies and medication adherence in relation to social functioning in schizophrenic patients. Method: The study was carried out using a descriptive correlational research design on a convenience sample of 200 patients diagnosed with Schizophrenia disorder at the Inpatient and Out-patient Psychiatric Department of Mansoura University Hospital. Results: Results revealed that 89.5% of the schizophrenic patients had low and moderate total social support. Emotion and Avoidance oriented coping strategies were most widely used than task oriented coping, 53.5% of the schizophrenic patients was non adherent to medication and 67.5% had low social functioning. Conclusion: The less social support, the more medication non adherence in addition to more maladaptive coping that patients with schizophrenia has, the highest low social functioning is. This study provides evidence for future training programs to the nursing staff and family members about the importance of social support in providing care for mental ill patients.
