Abstract The aim of this study was to compare diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging to ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration cytology in preoperative diagnosis of parotid gland tumors. This study was conducted in a prospective sequential manner. All patients were admitted to Head, Neck and Endocrine unit in Alexandria University main hospital. All patients were presented with a swelling in the parotid region. The routine laboratory investigations as well as ultrasound assessment were done to all patients. All patients had undergone: • Diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging. • Ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration cytology. Statistical analysis was done to evaluate the results and compare them with the standard results of other studies. This study was carried on 60 consecutive patients with tumor of the parotid gland diagnosed clinically and by ultrasound assessment of the swelling. Their ages ranged from 21 years to 79 years, with a mean age of (46. 33±15. 07 years). In this study there was a female predominance where the number of female patients was 32 patients (53. 3%) in comparison to male patients which was 28 patients (46. 7%). In this study, the sensitivity of FNAC was 33. 3%, specificity 94. 4%, accuracy 88. 3% while the sensitivity of MRI was 83. 3%, specificity 96. 3%, accuracy 95%. The combination of both DWMRI and FNAC sensitivity was 100%, specificity 96. 3%, accuracy 96. 67%. |
