Abstract

Because of the big height of sludge in lagoon (5 m height of sludge) it’s impossible to be dry with the sun effect, and it was difficult to emptying the sludge lagoon in spite of it takes long time. Therefore, another way to dry the sludge should be found, this method should be easy, fast and inexpensive to operate it as much as possible. The suggested method in this study is by thickening the thin sludge and complete drying it by drying beds, centrifuge or belt presses. According to the results obtained from this experimental work, the following conclusions can be made: 1. Using alum. sulphate as coagulant material isn’t useful2. Optimum pH range is 2 : 4 3. By increase the time of thickening the suspended solids ratio is increasing. 4. The difference between thickening for initial case and optimum case is not wide at the same time 5. The best ratio of SS on thickened sludge at time 9:50 hour is 22 gram / liter 6. A study and comparison of different drying methods shows that the optimum method is filter press method.
