Abstract

ABSTRACT
This research is mainly focusing on studying the three dimensional analysis of piled raft system using 3-D finite element method. Plaxis 3-D foundation has been used to study the complex behavior of piled raft system considering different factors such as pile diameter, pile length, pile spacing, number of pile and also different density of bed soil layers.
The work carried out during the course of this thesis has been done using the embedded pile numerical model which has less computing time and less storage capacity than the volumetric pile model. The results of the proposed model were compared with other sophisticated methods and satisfactory results were obtained. This had been carried out in terms of settlement and differential settlement behavior and contribution of load carried by piles and raft.
A parametric study was carried out in order to evaluate the relative importance of different factors affecting the behavior of piled raft system. The parameters have been categorized into six main categories:
 The first category was related to different raft thickness ranging between 0.5 to 2.5 m was considered.
 The second category was related to different pile diameters ranging between 0.5 to 0.8 m was considered.
 The third category was related to different pile spacing ranging between 4D, 6D, 8D and 10D was considered.
 The fourth category was related to different number of piles ranging from 4×4, 5×5, 6×6 and10×10 was considered.
Need for Research
Nowadays, many approaches have been optimized for analyzing piled-raft foundation despite the difficulty in the piled-raft systems. However, many of these approaches were difficult to be applied. Because these approach usually depend on utilizing stochastic models such as the artificial intelligent models, numerical analyses and analytical approaches. Usually, the numerical analyses are applied based on the computer software. Thus, to establish an accurate model, time, high accuracy
