Abstract

Trauma is the third leading cause of death in person under the age of 40 years. Blunt abdominal injuries are more common than penetrating abdominal injuries. Motor vehicle collisions representing the most common cause of abdominal trauma among emergency department patients . Blunt abdominal trauma can affect one or more than one organ of the abdomen. These include spleen, liver, kidney, diaphragm, stomach, small and large bowel, mesentry and large vessels . The major pathophysiology in abdominal trauma is the hemorrhage which is leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Active hemorrhage resulting in shock requires emergent operative intervention and aggressive hemostatic resuscitation. Sepsis usually occurs as a result of intra-abdominal infections from missed towel, perforations or anastomotic leaks. Approximately one third of all deaths from abdominal trauma occur immediately or shortly after transporting the patient to a treatment facility. Diagnostic and emergency management modalities are essential to fully evaluate and treat the uncontrolled bleeding . The aim of the present work was to describe the incidence, different presentations , record outcome, complications and evaluate the medical records in all patients presented with abdominal trauma to Emergency Department (ED) of EL MAHALLA EL KUBRA GENERAL HOSPITAL within 6 months. The total number of patients that suffered from abdominal trauma was 400 case. In the present study the male presentation was 84% while female 16% (M:F ratio was 5.3:1) The age groups ranged from 20-30 years till over 60 years old.
