Abstract

Infertility is a common health problem that might be induced by many factors and anti-cancerous are among the most common causes. Doxorubicin, and similar drugs used mainly in solid tumors is attributable to male infertility due to testicular intoxication, and issue necessitates the concomitant usage of protective agents especially with increase life expectancy of cancer patients associated with better health care.
The present study was designed to evaluate testicular toxicity of Doxorubicin in male albino Wistar rats and its amelioration with atorvastatin or folic acid.
A total of 50 male albino rats (Wistar strain) weighing 120-200g were procured from the animal house of the Human Anatomy Department, Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University. The animals were handled according to the code of ethics for experimental research adopted by Alexandria Faculty of Medicine.
The experimental rats were randomly divided into 5 groups consisting 10 animals in each group as follows:
group I (control):
Ten male rats received intraperitoneal injections of 5ml normal saline on 1st, 8th, 15th and 22th days of the study.
group II (low dose of DOX group):
Ten male rats received IP injections of DOX (2 mg/kg) dissolved in 1 ml normal saline on 1 stand 22th days of the study.
group III (high dose of DOX group):
Ten male rats received IP injections of DOX (5 mg/kg) dissolved in 1 ml normal saline on 1st, 8th, 15th and 22th days of the study.
group IV (high dose DOX + folic acid):
Ten male rats received IP injections pretreatment with folic acid (10 mg/kg) a day before, IP injections of DOX (5mg/kg) dissolved in 1 ml normal saline that given on 1st, 8th, 15th and 22 th days of the study.
group V (DOX + Atorvastatin):
Ten male rats received IP injections pretreatment with atorvastatin (10 mg/kg) a day before, IP injections of DOX (5mg/kg) dissolved in 1ml normal saline that given on 1st, 8 th, 15 th and 22 th days of the study.
