Abstract

Summary
The growing proportion of women experiencing controlled ovarian hyperstimulation for IVF / ICSI cycles was closely linked to the OHSS risk. Since metformin has favorable impacts on ovulation, metformin (because of its metabolic and vascular effects) may increase the responsiveness and outcome of IVF / ICSI cycles and may decrease the occurrence of OHSS. The research was performed a randomized controlled trial to assess the impact of metformin administration before and after controlled ovarian stimulation prior to IVF / ICSI as a cotherapy. 400 non-PCO infertile women were split into two categories at random; A: (metformin group) which included 200 women who received metformin in a dose of 500 mg every 8 hours starting in the cycle before stimulation and to be continued till the day of β-hCG. and B: (control group) which included 200 women.
Both groups were identical in terms of all demographic details and management (age, BMI, cause of infertility, basal hormonal profile, induction regimen, day, and amount of transferred embryos). No statistically relevant difference in period of stimulation (P=0.13), units of gonadotropins necessary for stimulation (P=0.44), total number of follicles collected (P=0.28), fertilization rate (P=0.35), β-hCG (P=0.74) and frequency of OHSS (P=0.3) was observed in metformin community. Considering that the value of P is only important if (P 0.05).
Metformin as co-therapy with managed ovarian hyperstimulation does not appear to promote IVF activation or enhance IVF treatment outcomes.
