Abstract

The present study aims to investigate gender identity and sexist, racist ideology in Donald Trump’s speeches. Thus, the study concentrates on the debates between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in the presidential elections of 2016 and some additional sources such as Trump’s tweets and interviews. The research intends to find out the linguistic devices and tools that Trump utilized to practice his political, social, and economic power, on the one hand, and reveal his racist and sexist attitudes, on the other hand. Therefore, the study utilized the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach synergizing with Discourse Historical Approach (DHA), Halliday’s functional processes, and van Leeuwen’s Social Actor Representations. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is an interdisciplinary approach that observes language to be an aspect of practice in society and converges on how political identities and ideological considerations are reflected in all sorts of texts. It demystifies identities, ideologies and demonstrates how the sources of power are of great interest shaped by investigating data in its different forms: spoken, written, or visual. This study attempts to use CDA to find out linguistic tools that uncover gender inequality. The study focused on Trump’s discourse more than Clinton’s discourse. Another focal point of this research is identity construction, particularly political identity since the speeches are anchored in a political field. The study tries to provide thorough answers to the research questions and the hypotheses. The findings indicated in many cases that Trump has been proven to be sexist and racist.
