Abstract

Background: Asthma is a common long-term inflammatory disease of the airways of the lungs. It is characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction, and easily triggered bronchospasms Symptoms include episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. These may occur a few times a day or a few times per week depending on the person, asthma symptoms may become worse at night or with exercise.
Aim and Objectives: To determine relation between serum interleukin (IL-4) level and body mass index (BMI) in astmatic patients.
Subjects and Methods: This study was conducted on 86individuals. They were equally classified into two groups: group 1(overweight and obese asthmatic patients) and group 2 normal body mass index asthmatic patients The program for sample size calculation is stata 10.
Result: This study was conducted on 86 asthmatics patients, attending outpatient clinics of Allergy and Immunology, Ain shams university hospital between november 2020and june 2021. They were divided into 2 groups, average weight asthmatic group and (overweight and obese) group. 43 of the studied population were average weight (BMI from 18-24.9) and 43 of them were overweight and obese (BMI more than 25). Their age ranging from 20 yrs old to 60yrs old.
Conclusion: Serum IL-4 level is significantly elevated in overweight and obese asthmatics than normal weight asthmatics and positively correlated with body mass index, this may indicate a pathogenic role in development of asthma in overweight and obese asthmatics our results suggest that these patients may benefit more from anti IL-4 treatment.Serum IL-4 level in asthmatic patients not affected by sex, age, skin prick test, pulmonary function test, esinophils and serum total IgE level
