Abstract

Background: Dental students are vulnerable to patient’s contaminated saliva and blood during dental practice throughout their education and clinical courses. They are at great risk of cross-infection. Avoiding exposure to such infections can be achieved by understanding and implementing the safety precautions and applying infection control strategies. It is important that students should be aware and complied to these precautions. Purpose: this study was conducted to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice of infection control measures among a sample of 4th and 5th grades students at Faculty of dentistry in Mansoura and Delta Universities during the academic year 2019-2020. Materials and Methods: About 50% of dental students in each of the 4th and 5th grades in Mansoura and Delta Universities were chosen randomly and participated in this cross sectional study. A self-administered questionnaire was designed to evaluate knowledge, attitude, and practice of infection control principles among these students. It was distributed into 7 parts and focused on the essential principles of infection control. After data collection, they were analyzed using (SPSS) program. Results: An overall of 87.3% of dental students in both universities had received HBV vaccination. But, not all of them were fully vaccinated. Mansoura University students had significantly higher knowledge and positive attitude concerning using protective barriers over Delta University students. They also showed more significantly positive attitude toward treating patients with infectious diseases and waste disposal compared to Delta University students. However, Delta University students significantly had elevated compliance with all infection control principles. Conclusion: Dental students in both Mansoura and Delta Universities had acceptable level of knowledge and positive attitude toward infection control principles. But, they had very poor compliance.
