Abstract

Liquid storage steel tanks are vertical aboveground cylindrical shells. And depending on the wall thickness , The tank would be subjected to buckling, especially when the tanks are empty. This research is to study the interaction between fluid and the thin shell using computational fluid dynamic programs. The most important factors in interaction are wind load computation which is done using CFD OpenFOAM F.V Program. Wind Pressure is determined based on the wind velocity ,and the pressure is reflected on the finite element Program ABAQUS .A comparison between the numerical results and analytical solutions is also presented . On the other hand, the sloshing of the filled liquid and its behavior in the event of earthquake has been computed using CFD program and compared to the analytical results.
The Numerical model Presented a steel tank shell with diameter of 16 m and height of 14 m. Attention is given to the load definition and the design criteria. Finite element analysis was performed considering the stresses from CFD computation for wind load. Attention also was given to study linear buckling analysis and the effect of stiffening the shell using the helical stair beams where the tank has stair covers the half circumference of the shell.
