Abstract

Cellulases are a group of hydrolytic enzymes capable of hydrolyzing the most abundant organic polymer i.e. cellulose to smaller sugar components including glucose subunits. Generally, three major type of enzymes ;endo-1,4-β–glucanase, cellobiohydrolase (exoglucanases, Avicelase), and β-glucosidase act synergistically in the saccharification of cellulose. The term “Avicelase” is therefore commonly regarded as synonymous with exoglucanase or cellobiohydrolase (CBH), avicelase or exoglucanases are usually active on crystalline cellulose. Avicel is the substrate for exoglucanase activity assay. Fungi are the main cellulase producing microorganism because of many-sided enzymatic machinery. Filamentous fungi belonging to genus Trichoderma and Aspergillus are known to be copious producers of cellulolytic enzymes, Compered with bacterial cellulases ,Fungal cellulases have a simple architecture. Because of the industrial importance of avicelase, there is ongoing interest in the isolation of new fungal strains producing suitable avicelase to new industrial applications. The aim of this study was to isolate some local cellulytic fungal isolates and investigate the optimal conditions for avicelase production from some agroresidues under solid state fermentation. Factors affecting avicelase activity produced by the most active isolates were also investigated.
