Abstract

In this study, the behavior of a multi-story, multi-bay flat slab structure subjected to fire was investigated. The material modelling for the thermal and mechanical properties are validated from the experimental data. The validated models were then adopted to carry out a three-dimensional finite element model on RC flat slab structure exposed to fire using ABAQUS. Four different fire scenarios of ISO-834 fire exposure of prototype structure were investigated. Fire scenarios included different locations and numbers of heated panels. The main criteria of comparison were mid-span deflection, shear forces on the columns, bending moment and the membrane forces of the floor slab. It was found that membrane force has a major role in the recorded slab fire resistance when fire causes a reduction in the slab bending moment capacity within the fire compartments. Furthermore, it was observed that the shear force induced on columns due to slab expansion forces increased when these columns were surrounded by more than one slab exposed to fire.
