Abstract

Spherical beads of copper hexacyanoferrate ion exchanger encapsulated barium alginate (CuHCF-BA) was synthesized by two steps:firstly the preparation of copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) using copper nitrate and potassium ferrocyanide, secondly the addition of suspension solution of copper hexacyanoferrate in sodium alginate solution to barium nitrate solution
The morphology of the prepared (CuHCF-BA) was studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis system (EDX). The physico-chemical characterization of the prepared (CuHCF-BA) was carried out by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Which FT-IR confirmed the structure of copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF)- BA beads.
The sorption capacity of the synthesized (CuHCF-BA) towards silver and cesium ions and the factors affecting on the sorption of silver and cesium from aqueous solutions were studied as function in pH, metal ion concentration, contact time and temperature by using batch technique. In batch equilibrium adsorption method, the optimum sorption pH for Ag+ was 7 and wide pH range from 5-10 for Cs+. The adsorption process followed the Freundlich isotherm model for silver ion indicated that the heterogeneous sorption is dominant but followed Langmuir model for cesium ion.
The kinetic experiments showed that adsorption well fits to pseudo-second order model for both two metal ions. Also Thermodynamic parameters showed that adsorption of Ag+ on (CuHCF)-BA resin is spontaneous and endothermic in nature but Cs+ is not spontaneous but endothermic in nature. (CuHCF)- BA resin was efficient for Ag+ and Cs+ removal by batch method.
