Abstract

Chronic airway diseases are associated with anxiety and/or depression, particularly in those with an obstructive pulmonary function and/or history of smoking. These psychiatric comorbidities have a significant negative impact on a patient‘s quality of life Aim of the study This study aims to evaluate these comorbidities in chronic airway diseases and its relationship with treatment on quality of life All subjects submitted to:Clinical assessment, functional assessment, psychiatric assessment through filling out psychiatric questionnaires as Hospital anxiety and depression scale, Beck depression inventory, Hamilton anxiety scale and quality of life assessment by St. George Respiratory questionnaires The present study found a higher prevalence of anxiety and/or depression among patients with chronic airway lung diseases than among those in the healthy control group,The findings of this study showed that risk factors of COPD-related and Bronchial asthma-related anxiety and/or depression included female gender, heavy smoking, and duration of disease, hospital admission and frequency of exacerbations in last year.
