Abstract
Translation of culture-specific items (CSIs), such as names of food, clothes, houses, organizations, proper names and cultural connotation and figures of speech, is most problematic in literary texts as they have an effect on how the target reader identifies the literary work. The translator’s duty is not only to transfer words from the Source Language (SL) into the Target Language (TL); however, his main task is to find the most suitable equivalent term between SL and TL. The focus of this study is to examine the translation of culture-specific items and figures of speech in George Orwell’s 1984 in two versions of Arabic translations, following Newmark’s (1988) classification of the culture-specific items by investigating the methods and procedures applied in the translation process from English into Arabic by employing Vinay and Darbelnet’s Taxonomy of translation procedures. Finally, the study traces the strategy adopted by each translator, i.e., domestication or foreignization, in rendering such cultural terms and figures of speech. The results revealed that both domestication and foreignization strategies were applied to overcome the obstacles faced while rendering figures of speech and culture specific items from English into Arabic.
