Abstract Retention of the fetal membrane and postpartum metritis are the most common affections of the cows during the postpartum period. The adverse effects of these affections are not limited to the future fertility of the cow, but their effects extend to the productivity and may end with the death or culling of the cows. Research efforts have been made either to affirm a practical method to decrease the incidence of these two affections or to define an optimum treatment protocol that could minimize the drawback of these affections. Despite hundreds of studies had investigated this problem, we are still far from defining the ideal treatment of retention of the fetal membrane and postpartum metritis. Therefore, the current study was designed to: 1- Investigate some pre-partum factors as risk factors for retention of the fetal membrane and postpartum metritis. 2- Evaluate the effect of retention of the fetal membrane and postpartum metritis on fertility indices. 3- Compare the reproductive indices between cows treated with Ceftiofur or the conventional Penicillin-Streptomycin treatment. |
