Abstract

Early life malnutrition is associated with later life health problems, Particularly Stunting, which is a height-for-age Z score ˂-2SD of the WHO median. Prevalence of under-five stunting, wasting and underweight are 21% and, 8% and 6% respectively in Egypt 2014 The main risk factors for growth restriction in children are maternal undernutrition during pregnancy, lack of exclusive breastfeeding, inappropriate complementary feeding and micronutrient intake and high prevalence of enteric infections. However, other environmental exposures may also play a role in growth restriction The main source of exposure to arsenic is through ingestion of contaminated water through tube wells, food especially Rice and animal products Exposure to Arsenic can be intrauterine via crossing the placenta or postnatal through ingestion of contaminated water. Child toys also can be a source of arsenic exposure. Manifestation of chronic toxicity on children include skin lesions, chronic lung disease, intellectual function affection and growth restriction. Improvement of under-five nutritional status is one of WHO global targets in 2025. Although Arsenic toxicity Is a global concern now, Few studies has been conducted to detect the relation between Arsenic exposure and malnutrition in children (infants and up to 2 years) which is a short period during which the child is protected from exposure by breast feeding. The reviewed evidence was insufficient to conclude whether arsenic exposure is associated with malnutrition Aims of the study Assessment of the nutritional status of 2-5 years children attending the Nutritional Clinic of Assiut University Children Hospital, to studying some risk factors for malnutrition among 2-5 years children attending the Nutritional Clinic of Assiut University Children Hospital and, studying the effect of chronic Arsenic exposure on 2-5 years children nutritional status.
