Abstract

This thesis deals with the importance and efficiency of outdoor spaces in healthcare facilities named therapeutic gardens. Therapeutic gardens can improve patient health results and respond to their mental, social, or emotional needs. So, the research aimed to identify the philosophy of therapeutic landscapes as a healthcare facility, its role in the treatment of various diseases, and to study the various factors and determinants influencing the design of gardens in hospitals. In this thesis, after reviewing the different therapeutic gardens and its design guidelines, the research focused on evaluating the gardens attached to children’s cancer hospitals because of the research shortage in this field in Egypt and the great role of the pediatric community in helping these children to speed recovery. This is accomplished through the following chapters: CHAPTER ONE: Introduction: CHAPTER TWO: Literature Review:  Identify terminologies and definitions.  Prove the positive effect on health in general from natural environments and in particular from healing gardens (Benefits and theories framework).  Study of history of healing gardens. CHAPTER THREE: Designing of healing and therapeutic gardens:  Summarizing the general design requirements of healing gardens (Planning process considerations, comprehensive design considerations, and considerations for the physical elements of all healing gardens).  Summarizing the specific design considerations of therapeutic gardens (Alzheimer’s, frail elderly, cancer patients, psychopaths, children and pediatric gardens).  Reach out a schema of general and specific design considerations. CHAPTER FOUR: Post-Occupancy Evaluation (P.O.E):  Learn about post occupancy evaluation and defining its strategies.  selection Reasons and criteria for the case study. III  Identify the current status of the building and the outdoor spaces of the case study.  Put the method and research design.  Determine and studding of the criteria of post-occupancy evaluation for the studied case.  Definition of the tools used in the evaluation process (visual analysis, behavioral observation, and questionnaire). CHAPTER FIVE: Results:  Results concerning the physical and geographical analysis of the site.  Conclusion of user groups, time they spent in the garden, and barriers to garden visitation by studying and monitoring users of the garden.  Specify the use distribution and most distinctive places in the garden by evaluating the different activities and uses for both visitors, patients, and employees through behavior maps and behavior matrix.  Reach for the results of the questionnaire on general and specific design considerations and the degree of user satisfaction about features in the garden. CHAPTER SIX: Conclusions and Recommendation.
